Lamu cleanup/recycling program

What we have done:

In response to the high trash buildup on the beach and throughout the town of Lamu, a cleanup was started February 2, 2009 by Omar Ali.  Youths from the area were recruited to help in the effort as well as visiting tourists.  A local business, a food wholesale donated two trashcans to aid in the trash cleanup.

Tourists donated $100 during the two and half months the program was working.  Omar put $500 towards purchasing materials: baskets for picking up trash, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, and brooms; $200 was put towards food to provide lunch for the youths and volunteers taking part in the cleanup.  Local residents donated $60 towards food for the workers as well; $100 was put towards providing a small stipend to pay 20 of the youths involved from Feb-April 2009.
An estimated three miles of the Lamu seafront was cleaned.

Trash was then hauled by tractor to a dumpsite on the East side of the island.  Omar met with the City Council members to request assistance in using the only tractor in Lamu to haul the trash to the dumpsite.  The City Council agreed to help as much as they could (see obstacles).
